Luckily the city I live in is very European in flavor. Easy walk, easy bike, public transit (Though that could be improved greatly and they are working on that.)
Buy almost everything I need locally. Don't need to own a car (I'm a 15 to 20 minute walk from the train station and from there I can catch the commuter into Boston.)
I suppose if I biked it the train station would only be a 5 to 10 minute ride.
